NOAA View - Data Exploration Tool

Fourth in a series of More Lessons from the Sky lesson modules designed to enhance the learner's toolbox of data acquisition skills, this hands-on tutorial guide is an introduction to NOAA View, an online data exploration tool from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Environmental Visualization Laboratory. NOAA View is a "data imagery portal" providing "access to NOAA's wealth of global data resources." NOAA View works on all display types including computer browsers on desktops, laptops, tablets, and many cell phones. It visualizes data from satellites, surface analysis, historical archives, and teacher predictions. Although this site was constructed for outreach and educational purposes and is not considered part of NOAA's official data centers, the outstanding imagery provides initial indications and supplies links to the original, science-quality data. In this tutorial lesson, learners will experience the value and utility of NOAA View for themselves while becoming familiar with its "look and feel." The impressive global imagery generated from a wide range of datasets is a great introduction to analysis and interpretation of remote sensing data for younger investigators while providing a first-look prior to more detailed imaging and analysis for older learners.
